DARUJTE

The 21st of March 2021 in Poland was not only the first day of Spring, but also the official Day of Willows. Our project partners from Foundation of Eco-development celebrated by planting weeping willow in the park (called Park of Trees) in Wroclaw city. The weeping willow symbolizes the sad fate of trees in today’s Poland. They also published video demonstrating how properly plant willow trees.

As well as in our country, willows have always been a traditional element of the landscape in Polish countryside. They have been planted along the rivers, fields, they have spread over riverbanks and wetlands as a fundamental species of alluvial forest. Unfortunately, in last decades they have started to disappear.

The cause of the decline of willows are channelization of water courses and industrialization of agriculture, the willow alleys along the road are eliminated as well.

The disappearance of willows not only make the landscape more uniform but has also serious impact on biodiversity. The soft willow wood is favorite nesting habitat for woodpecker, wood pigeon likes to inhabit the dense crowns of willow trees. In cavities of the old trees, we can find rare and protected species of insect, including our favorite hermit beetle.

Willows growing on riverbanks also help to stabilize the water levels and to clean water and absorb pollutants and excessive nutrients.
